Chicago Golf Courses
Edgebrook Golf Club
6100 North Central Ave., Chicago IL 60646; Tel. 773.763.8320
Not much to this Chicago golf course, which is ideal for seniors and beginners. The Chicago River makes for some marginal scenery. It's an 18-hole, par 66 and comes in around 4,600 yards. Green fees are $19.
Harborside International Golf Center - Chicago-Illinois.com Editor's Pick
11001 S. Doty Ave., Chicago IL 60628; Tel. 312.782.7837
Chicago's premier golf course, considered by numerous publications (including Golf Digest) to be one of the top public courses in the country. Two golf courses make up the complex, the Port course (par-72, 7,164 yards from the pro tees), and the Starboard course (par-72, 7,166 yards from the pro tees). Both courses feature award-winning conditions; the course opened in 1995. Designed by Dick Nugent, both courses have played host to national and international tournaments of all levels, including the Champions tour and the PGA tour. Former President Bill Clinton recently aced the par-3 6th hole on the Port course, and yes, he bought drinks for the entire clubhouse. Green fees look like the $80 to $120 range.
Indian Boundary Golf Course
8600 W. Forest Preserve Dr., Chicago IL 60634; Tel. 773.625.2013
Another Chicago municipal track, Indian Boundary Golf Course is bordered by the Des Plaines River and situated on rolling, uneven terrain. It's a par 70, coming in at a scant 5,991 yards, but the terrain and the abundant water hazards make it interesting. Chicago golfers can play here for under $20.
Jackson Park Golf Club
6300 Hayes Dr., Chicago IL 60637; Tel. 312.747.2763
Jackson Park is the oldest Chicago course (circa 1899), and also the Chicago golf course with most the character. Considered an absolute steal, the Chicago golf course is well maintained by the Chicago's Parks and Recreation Department, yet still costs only a mere $19 to play. One mid-western writer describes couples making out in the buses and pedestrian traffic across several fairways from nearby schools, but still insists it's one of his favorite Chicago golf courses. The course is a fun, 5,508 yard, par-70.
Mount Prospect Golf Club
600 See Gwum Ave., Mt. Prospect IL 60056; Tel. 847.632.9300
Just six miles from downtown Chicago, this unique Chicago golf course was built by an unknown architect. It's tough, especially the greens, and it plays 6,200 yards exactly from the tips. The course is complimented for its design, but can be overplayed in peak seasons. Expect to pay between $37 and $47.
Old Orchard Country Club
700 W.Rand Rd., Mt. Prospect IL 60056; Tel. 847.255.2025
Originally opened in 1932, this mature Chicago area golf course has seen its fair share of rounds, yet continues to be one of the best-maintained golf courses in the greater Chicago area. About 10 miles from downtown Chicago, Old Orchard offers country club conditions at municipal prices. It plays at 6,119 yards from the tips, and is known for its short, tight doglegs. Green fees are in the $36-$55 range.
River Oaks Golf Course
1 Park Ave., Calumet City IL 60409; Tel. 708.366.9466
Another short (5,863 yards), 18-hole David Nugent design, this Chicago golf course is located just three miles outside of Chicago. What sets this Chicago golf course apart is the Little Calumet River, which comes into play on 14 holes. Green fees are in the $12-$21 range.
